Learn more about the Filipino-American War

February 4, 1899 means little to us. Yet that was the day war began between the United States and the fledgling government of Emilio Aguinaldo. It would take 126,000 American soldiers to take over the country at the cost of over 500,000 Filipino lives.  Join John Silva in February at the Museum of the Filipino People.

Ballet Philippines presents The Nutcracker

Ballet Philippines’ 2009 production of the Nutcracker ballet is all about Christmas, both in its essence and trappings. It is also a story about a girl Marie, dreaming about white Christmas, about traveling to foreign lands, and about meeting a handsome, gallant prince one day. Set in the early 1900s in cool, pine-clad Baguio, a Filipino-American couple celebrates Noche Buena in their Camp John Hay residence with their multinational guests and children. The family and guests are entertained by Conde de Montaña, a mysterious toy maker/inventor who is also Marie’s Godfather. A post-party series of magical events occur from a battle scene between the wicked mice of the Mouse King and toy soldiers led by the Nutcracker before a giant Christmas tree; a journey through a snow storm to the Kingdom of the Sweets where Marie and the Nutcracker Prince are treated to a feast of delights. About the triumph of Good over evil and of Love over a curse, about gifts and giving, this ballet also tells of the coming of age of our heroine from her passion for dolls to the thrills of first love.

Cats Manila in July 2010 Features Lea Salonga as 'Grizabella'

CATS, the second longest-running musical in Broadway history, will have a limited run at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) beginning July 24, 2010. This production will feature Tony winner Lea Salonga as Grizabella, and an international cast that will primarily come from Australia, and the United Kingdom.

BroadwayWorld.com Philippines had a quick interview with Lea while enroute to Toronto, Canada for her U.S. and Canada 2009 concert tour. "The tour has been going along very nicely! We've had very receptive and enthusiastic audiences at every stop, and it makes me happy we've been greeted so wonderfully. I think CATS in Manila is also a touring production. But I'll only be part of it in Manila," she said.

"I'll be playing Grizabella (aka the non-dancer part). As for what attracts me to her, besides the big song? Grizabella is The cat that shone in the spotlight once upon a time, and doesn't anymore. She's scraggy, dirty, ugly, and relives the Glory Days in her mind. It'll be interesting to play someone that once shone, and no longer does," noted Lea.
